Treating Unwanted Veins On Legs

This is one treatment only

Why Sclerotherapy:

It improves the appearance of varicose and spider veins.  Reduces aching, swelling, burning, and night cramps.  It is often considered the treatment of choice for small varicose veins.

How it Works:

Our Nurse Practitioner will do a physical exam and gather medical history.  She evaluates the involved veins and gives you a treatment plan.  If taking any blood thinning medication, you may be asked to stop it a few days prior to treatment.  The day before the procedure, wear loose comfortable clothing and bring compression hose.  If you do not have any, you can purchase some from us.

A solution is injected directly into the vein, causing it to scar, forcing blood to reroute through healthier veins.  The collapsed vein is then reabsorbed and eventually fades.  The fading happens quickly and up to several weeks.  Sometimes it may take a few months to see full results.  Further treatments may be needed.  Immediately after you will be asked to wear compression hose and every day for about two weeks.

Side Effects:

Site of injection may experience redness, inflammation.  Usually it is mild, and you can take OTC medication to reduce it.  Superficial blood clot may occur, if so, it can be drained.  Air bubbles may rise in your bloodstream.  These usually do not cause severe symptoms and disappear in time.

After the Procedure:

You can walk immediately and return to normal activities the same day.  Abstain from strenuous exercise for two weeks and sun exposure to the treated areas since it may lead to skin discoloration.

Studies of sclerotherapy as a treatment for varicose and spider veins show overall success rates of sixty to eighty percent.
